It's National Love a Tree Day! One of our most admired trees here in the park - and one that is the source of many questions - is the Texas Madrone (Arbutus xalapensis). This specimen is shown shedding its bark, which sometimes sparks concern in tree lovers unfamiliar with this plant. There's no cause for alarm; this is a natural occurrence in its growth cycle. Just as many people incorporate exfoliation of dead skin into their self-care routine, the Texas Madrone sheds the old to show off a smooth, vibrant layer underneath. Keep being fabulous, Texas Madrone!

Beautiful photo!

Thanks for sharing this! I was just hiking there and wondering what they were!

I know where the largest Texas Madrone is in the Guadalupes but I ain't telling. Only one bigger in the state.
