This year marks 50 years that the Kīpahulu section has been part of Haleakalā National Park. On January 10, 1969, much of the ancient moku (district) of Kīpahulu was added to Haleakalā National Park with the help of The Nature Conservancy and the local community. This area has been home to Native Hawaiians for hundreds of years and remains an integral part of the thriving Native Hawaiian culture. This section of the park is also the home to rare native Hawaiian plant and animal species found nowhere else in the world.
You can find the Kīpahulu section of the park by driving the famous Hāna Highway that loops around the eastern coast of Maui. Kīpahulu is home to the famous pools of ‘Ohe‘o , sweeping ocean vistas, and Hawaiian cultural experiences. Park staff have been working to protect and educate the public about the valuable resources that are found at this special place. For your safety, flash floods can occur at anytime, please heed all closures posted. #haleakalā #NPS #kipahulu #mauihistory ... See MoreSee Less
